Then the story tightens around a name pulled straight from the headlines—Mukhtar Sheik Mohammed—recast with a single dangerous chance at freedom. After years in confinement, waterboarded more than eighteen times, he comes out different: disciplined, patient, fluent in the weak seams of the legal system, and carrying a private, unpayable debt. The chase runs from Guantanamo to the Middle East, where he makes his first move after release. And then he pivots—toward Southport. Why there? That’s the question. And the answer is the secret at the heart of For What Is Sacred.
